The Role Yoga Can Play in Transforming Complex Trauma

This masterclass offers practical and theoretical exploration of the broad intersections between the neurobiology of trauma and the ‘bottom-up’ and ‘top-down’ healing pathways that Yoga can provide. Research and lived experience will bring informed insight into how Yoga can work with body, mind, emotions and various levels of consciousness, thus supporting gradual, self-paced healing of the complex effects of trauma, both hidden and expressed.

Description

This masterclass offers practical and theoretical exploration of the broad intersections between the neurobiology of trauma and the ‘bottom-up’ and ‘top-down’ healing pathways that Yoga can provide.

Research and lived experience will bring informed insight into how Yoga can work with body, mind, emotions and various levels of consciousness, thus supporting gradual, self-paced healing of the complex effects of trauma, both hidden and expressed.

Gentle, trauma-informed Yoga experiences will be interspersed with the presentation and discussions. Participants will choose their level of engagement and can remain in chairs, move around or be on the floor. It promises to be a refreshing day of self-nurturing and learning as we combine gentle movement with mindfulness and creative and scientific thinking.

By participating in this workshop, attendees will:

  • Understand the range of aspects and styles of Yoga, how they work and how mental health and Yoga fields can work together to help individuals with different needs access and assess suitable Yoga options.

  • Explore research and lived experience that show how Yoga can help heal complex trauma.

  • Experience gentle Yoga stretches, simple postures, breathing focus, foundational relaxation and meditation techniques.

  • Take away practical models and inspiration to integrate Yoga and other somatic work in their professional and personal lives and their organisations/services.

Who should attend?

This workshop will be valuable for all workers and professionals who work in trauma and mental health fields. No prior experience of Yoga or level of fitness is required.
